The Known Hauntings Of Tasmania

How haunted is Tasmania?

It’s hard to classify how haunted Tasmania is or could be? Throughout the paranormal realm of Australia Tasmania is somewhat over looked in being an extremely haunted place, but Tasmania has a different feel to the place, one will notice this as one travels around… deep within the beauty of Tasmania lies a mystical side that’s full of mysterious wonders. But Tasmania does have a dark side as well, things happen without explanations or logic, but why? Does this have something to do with the once rich and sadden aboriginal past (that was destroyed by the settlers), could it have something to do with the introduction of the convict and settlers, the bushranger era, cannibalism which Alexander Pearce started… we really don’t know.

Tasmania was originally called Van Diemen’s Land and was changed after the convict era (this was to erase it bloody and shameful past) which didn’t work as the past is still remembered here with great passion. Once it was shameful to admit that you were convict related but today every Tasmanian claims to have a relative who was a convict of some sort and are extremely proud of that fact.

One of Tasmania’s greatest traditions as the same in Britain was to tell tales of strange occurrences, it seems parents enjoyed scaring the kids as much as the kids loved to hear tales of the paranormal, plus on school camps like in America tales were told around camp fires. Not every house hold told tales but some how most of us grew up knowing these tales, we know we have heard them but who was it that told us, but the thing is we know them. Apart from the odd tale told, there have been plenty of sightings… not only ghostly but ufo and weird creatures (mainly the Tasmanian Tiger) there are hundreds of haunted places that have a ghost or two, there are roads and beaches, old ruins and cemeteries that have reported sightings…. This is where we jump into the ghostly side of Tasmania, some information about these hauntings and sightings are on our haunted information page… we also have to look at the violence or reasons for these active hauntings.

Tasmania (when the settlers first came) was built of hard labour, violent punishments, insanity and isolation, brutal deaths… yes even cannibalism, for a history of just over 200 years, this little island has one hell of a brutal past… no wonder this place was called hell on earth (also Port Arthur carried this name for the time the penal system was operational) even in the days of bushrangers it still was a very frightening place to live… death was daily here in Tasmania.

Every one knows about Port Arthur and it’s brutal past and it’s frequent sightings of ghosts… but there must be other places that could be just as or even more haunted that Port Arthur, so lets explore a few places, this page will be updated until all places of haunted reputation is on here.

Willow Court

Is a very haunted place indeed; its past was server and frightening… why you ask? Well Willow Court was an old mental and lunatic asylum, Tasmania’s most disturbed patients have spent time or lived there, that was until its closure in 2000. With a place like this and the patients it took care of, there is bound to be thousands of violent stories and incidents that took place. We are unsure of how the patients were treated in its earlier days, maybe treated badly and often abused, but as far as I can remember the patients were treated very well and like human beings. When I was in my teens (I can’t remember where I heard it from but) a story came to my ears and in some ways showed the nasty side of it, in the 1940’s a child rapist was sent there… instead of prison as he showed signs of mental behaviour, so they placed him in a safe ward (so to speak) after a time in there and realising he was safe he started to gloat about his disgusting crimes, he told this group of patients about one child who suffered his wraith… later that night a loud scream was heard coming from his room, the staff ran in and found the rapist with no fingers on either hand… it seems the rapist when telling his story he didn’t know that a relative of one of the victims (uncle I believe) was sitting at the table, the uncle took to the hands with large knife cutting off fingers to the knuckles… Now I’m not sure if this is true but it does sound like something that would happen in a place like this. There must be other tales properly to graphic for the public and we may never hear about them, it must of being a horrible place and with horrible places horrible acts and deaths can happen. We rate this place extremely high in hauntings and it’s a place where one of the team may encounter that violent spirit that is there.

Linda

Situated on the West Coast of Tasmania, only 5 minutes drive from Queenstown lays the ruined township of Linda.

The west coast has been described as Mordor (from lord of the rings) its burnt colouration to the scenery adds to the mysterious land.

In its day Linda was a thriving place, with over 600 residents who lived and worked in the area (mainly the mine) it had around 20 business, a boarding house, 4 other hotels, a dance hall and scattered homes, all of these except The Royal Hotel was destroyed by the fire, there is little left in Linda this day and age.

Has a sad reputation to it, ( ) 44 mine workers died in a tragic way. A server bush fire tore down through the valley of Linda; the men were inside the Royal Hotel and were taken by surprise by the shear intensity of the fire, it engulfed the hotel before the men could react, it trapped them inside and unfortunately they perished… a terrible way to go and without warning. A place like this sometime keeps the spirits trapped and there for are unable to move on. The men suffered tragic deaths and this could be a foundation to hauntings, we unsure if anyone has conducted an investigation there, so we don’t know if the spirits are restless and forlorn, what we do know is that we are investigating their soon and hopefully have some evidence to so we can help these souls across the other side. This rate’s high with us due to the fact of a sad history this place now carries with it.

Only small hidden reminders remain of the town of Linda, and if you were to drive through you may miss it, if you blink. The place has become one of Tasmania’s forgotten historical gems; the place is a reminder of pure tragedy, but also a place where prosperity grew.

Now all that’s left is whisperings of past lives, this place should never be forgotten, but in modern time it is and will, but then again its happening in schools around Tasmania, the education in awareness of our history is becoming like the Tassie Tiger… extinct… which is very sad.

Suicide Cliffs

This place lived up to its name or was given the name due to the high rate of suicides. Suicide Cliff is 50 feet high and is on the peninsula across from Port Arthur. The sad thing is that young boys and teenagers committed suicide off these cliffs as a way to escape the suffering of Point Puer penitentiary; this place only housed men until they were 16 or abouts. It must have been a living hell that suicide is the only way, some boys even made pacts to jump together. We are unsure into how many young men jumped but it must have been a lot, the suffering and pain they were going though is hard to imagine as we live in a time with laws and rights… these young men didn’t. Another sad place and you can feel it when you’re near the cliffs; the question still remains “Are they seagulls we hear or the screams of the young men leaping to their dooms”? We rate this place an area one may go and be over whelmed with emotions of sadness.

Gibbets Hill

Is a place of justice and suffering, the area is just outside of Launceston and was once a place where bushrangers (when captured) were taken and displayed in large iron casts called gibbets, the bushrangers were kept in them until their deaths… sometimes left in them to the skin falls of their bones. The one thing about Tasmania or I should say Van Diemens Land was the punishments were torture and public. This punishment was to help stop bushrangering in Tasmania… and it did help, the era of bushrangers were coming to an end. Though if you were a bushranger and saw one of your mates hanging in an iron cast, with the blazing sun bearing down… you may have changed your ways. The ghost encounters can be found on our haunted info page. When one drives past the area one can not help but look in hope of seeing someone hanging in an iron case. The place has had the odd ghost sighting and it’s hard to conduct an investigation as it is right on the Midlands highway.

Hobart Penitentiary Chapel

The smell of stale blood is smelt in the underground cells. The Hobart Penitentiary Chapel is one place with the potential of having more violent encounters with ghosts than Port Arthur, the most sadistic, brutal, savage convicts or prisoners were hung there. Though hangings were only reserved for violent offenders and 32 violent convicts, bushrangers and murders were hung there between 1857/ 1946 (the last hanging ever to take place in Tasmania) Oh and it wasn’t only men who suffered the hangman’s noose, there was one lady (Irish) hung aswell. This place has a foundation of nasty deaths, some say the spirits are very restless, some have felt them walking on a ghost tour, the underground tunnels seem to be the place that people don’t like going down in to…. And who could blame them, it completely dark, cramped and suffocating with spirit energy. We would have to say pound for pound that Hobart Penitentiary would rival any ghosts at Port Arthur; they may be a bit more insane and violent?

Melrose

This place has a resident ghost whom hate’s the front door closed. Every night at the same time (8.00 pm)

The door will open even if it is locked. (No other haunting from this old home has been recorded.)

Anson Bay Road

There is a story about a guy riding his bike, when his strap of his bag becomes entangled in the spokes of the wheel forcing him to fall and breaking his neck…Some people to this day have seen a figure on the road wandering about as to look for something, only to disappear moments later.

Weldbrough (The Cemetery)

Not a lot of haunted activity is known about this cemetery, except to say that there is an uneasy feeling of sadness.

Pyengana

A lady in period dress has been seen on a number of occasions around the PYENGANA region. She appears only to disappear just as quick.

Pyengana Church

This place has 2 ghosts, the first it seems to walk around the grounds of the cemetery/church grounds as if waiting to be let in, so that he can peacefully rest. The other is a ghost who sits on the gate, who does nothing except sit there…maybe waiting for someone or something.

Four Mile Creek

3 Mysterious figures have been seen walking up and down the beach, the figures leave no footprints and when approached they vanish into thin air.

The Blue Tiers

There is a place that the locals know as Ghostly Corner, that if you are lucky enough you might see a figure of a man standing on the side of the road, and if you do, you are one in only a hand full to see the ghost of Ghostly Corner.

Bona Vista (Old Homestead)

Not a lot of haunted history has been recorded at Bona Vista,The underground cells were a haven for ghost finders, no-one has investigated the cells in twenty years, The sounds of muffled voices and uneasy sounds of cells doors closing are enough to put any brave soul off going there, also bloodstains on the front stairs are hard to wash off, they may be from a bushrangers duel that happened there. If you stay a night at Bona Vista, some say they refuse to go back…but why?

Garth (Old Homestead)

This place has a history of haunting and the 2 most known cases are that of a heart broken male and a young girl.

The heart broken male, hung himself in the courtyard, his ghost has been seen walking the grounds and the sound of creaking rope has been heard.

The young girl she fell into a well near the house where she lost her life by drowning.

Parliament House (HOBART)

A creepy tale of a mysterious figure that walks the hallways, only to disappears into the walls.

Shadows have been seen, unexplainable footsteps, which upon investigation find nothing and no one.

Though the most haunting tale is the speaker’s room, those who remain at night will not enter this room for anything. So what’s behind the door?

Old Royal Hospital

The hospital had a tale of a lady in “blue” that would walk around looking in on patients, those who saw her, felt very comfortable when she was around. (Maybe the lady in blue was a previous nurse?

Sassafras

There used to be an old house that had a reputation of being haunted, in one incident a guy and his dog entered the house to dispel the myth about the house. Some how during the night, his dog started to attack an unseen presence in a frenzied attack the dog ended up strangled, and the man he fled never to return not even for his dogs carcass.

Wanstead

The only haunting recorded is the sound of a piano playing, when investigated no one is at the piano and the lid is down.

The Road

The road is between Sorell and the town of Richmond; years ago a convict executed a brutal attack on an innocent woman. In the after math the woman had been raped and strangled, now the woman’s ghost is said to haunt the area, years ago a lone hunter became her first victim, he was found clinging to a fence, eyes bludging in fear and very much dead. If you’re game to walk the ghost area doesn’t stay around to long you never know what would happen?

Campbell Town Old Hag

At the southern end of town is the Campbell Town Bridge, for decades now an old lady is seen standing near the bridge, as one drives by she raises her fist and yells obscene remarks at you, in which she disappears off the side of bridge.

Gladstone Cemetery

You have to do this at night, when you drive up towards the cemetery and as you come closer towards it, though on a certain headstone a set of

Eyes watching from over the headstone, also there’s a shearing shed that has a reputation for ghostly activity, a lot of strange noise’s are heard when you walk by. If anyone knows more about this place please email us at Team Strigoi.

Rushy Lagoon

Those who drive the Rushy Lagoon rd would have seen a lady and child along the road, nothing unusual right? Except these 2 figures are known to vanish when approached, so if you drive along and see mother and child. Look again they might be ghosts.

Allison’s Road

Some times we hear a story that will affect us in some way; well this is one of those stories. The reason we are dedicating a piece on Allison’s Rd, because this place has a deep, brutal and sad history to it. Before we start, we would like to thank our co-team from the north/ west area for more information (also check out their contribution to Team Strigoi).

We are doing an investigation their very soon and we hope to bring you photos and video footage of that account.

In the early 1900’s a young child is brutally attacked along a stretch of road in (North Mutton), the area is surrounded by thick native Tasmanian forests, man ferns line the road, tall trees block most of the sunlight. Her battered and broken body was callously dumped into a tree trunk, a broach she was wearing was found in her throat, no one was charged with this heinous crime, though some were suspected of doing the atrocity. So now it seems that the spirit of the young girl is roaming the area, this spirit is seeking revenge, she is seeking the one who stopped her life, her retribution is enormous. Those who drive along this road will (mostly) encounter the young girl. Cars have known to stop, some shutter violently, cars have become engulf (on the inside) with black smoke, that evaporates just as quickly as it appears. There are those who have claimed to see the young girl, standing near the spot she was murdered, she walks in front of the car only to disappear. If you are game to get out of the car, the area has an intimidating feel to it, shrieking sound have been heard erupting from the bush, it’s a sound that will un-nerve all those who hear it. Screams of pain heard and moaning aswell, though it seems no one has yet stayed the full night, but if it gets to hair rising for us, we won’t stay for long. Though we hope that in some way, us going may help the child understand that a lot of folk wants to see this poor spirit rest, her attacker is most likely past on, so hope the young child may do the same…there’s a better place waiting for her, than this one.

If anyone has encountered the young spirit, contact us and let us know what happened or maybe you may have heard something else about the area and Allison’s Rd, we would love to hear your tale of terror.

From people hanging themselves, to an old man (Ghost) seen walking the grounds.

The Bridge Hotel (OUSE)

Though we have never been to “Ouse” to explore its history, so we don’t know if the old ruin hotel “The Bridge” has been pulled down or renovated, though when it was a ruin it has a vicious ghost, one night when the moon was full a small group of friends went to the ruin on a dare to enter the place and see how long they could last, the only real brave one was a female who climbed the decaying stairs as soon as she reach the top she was grabbed very violently on the shoulder and pushed, she fell down the stairs and was lucky to only come away with a few scratches and walk away from the ruin (or should I say piss bolted).

Cox Bight

The area is very ruggered, the weather can get extreme, but those who visit the area will flee at night, there’s something that lurks in the scrub that makes people flee in fright.

Bishopscourt

This lovely old home has a forlorn spirit of a woman who is” rarely “seen walking around a room crying who then disappears when approached.

Cascades Bay

The name has been changed its known now as “Koonya” situated on the peninsula (near Port Arthur), a woman awoke to the sound of sobbing, she then saw a young child sitting on, and who turned and instantly disappears.

Epping Forest

Copley Creek

There are reports of a white apparition of a female who appears in front of some cars as you cross the bridge, she is known to cause fatal accidents, some years ago a group of friends were driving along when the car breaks down near the bridge, still a distance to their destination and heavy rain forced them to stay in the car, through the boredom and waiting for a another car to come they fell asleep, they were woken up to the car rocking violently and it was pushed forward towards the bridge by unseen presence.

Raminia Bridge

Ghost sighting in the day light, a woman is seen standing on the bridge, no-one knows who she is or why the bridge maybe a suicide.

Macquarie Habour

The island is called “Sarah Island” and it was a convict prison back in the early 1800’s, a very violent and desolated place, desperate men tried to escape and if they didn’t drown by shark infested waters then the wild terrain of the west coast would, convicts would die in their cells due to the freezing condition and spray from the ocean, that would come from large gapping cracks in the walls, some died from isolation and brutality from the guards, strange sounds move through the ruins, shadows moving, shrieks are heard enough to chill the very marrow of one’s bones.

Taroona

The Shot Tower is haunted by a Mr. Joseph Moir, who opens a heavy door, which is unable to open by it’s self.

Lachlan Mill House

This was known as “ The Oat House” no really creepy phenomena happening has happened here, only the sound of machinery in motion coming from the old dry room, also a man was meant to of hung himself there, we don’t know if he is the cause for the machinery working.

Ball & Chain (HOBART)

When you are eating at this restaurant, ghosts are the last thing on your mind, there is a table that has a seat that “Charlie the ghost” inhabits, though some who have sat there will sometimes have a unseen strong presence pull your folk away from the mouth, is it Charlie playing games?

St Andrew’s Inn

The small white inn at “Cleveland”, situated on the Midlands Highway, a place all Tasmanians know, this place houses a few ghosts, and their activity.

The sound of rocks hitting the window has been heard on a number of occasions.

Guest have found their clothes neatly folded and put away, even when no staff has entered the room

There’s a female ghost who haunts the stairs and take great pleasure in stripping males that she comes across

A psychical forced has stopped a few people from walking down the hall, some describe it as an invisible brick wall.

The sound of a fight was heard and upon investigating found tables and chairs turned over as if a fight did take place, but all doors and windows locked.

Evandale Cemetery

This is one little cemetery (I personally) wanted to explore, I have heard one tale about the cemetery, now whether it's true or not I cannot say, but one night a few years (about 15 years) back two friends dared each other to stay the night in the cemetery, both go on dark. Once there they walk around looking at the headstones, it was near 10pm when one decided to leave though boredom, the other stayed, maybe to prove that he was brave enough to make it through the night.... he started to drift off when a shriek came from the bottom of the graveyard, it frightened him enough for him to want to leave, as he was getting up he saw a figure coming towards him, at first he thought it was his mate returning...but the figure walked through the headstones...he didn’t stay long...who would?

We do not know if its fact or fiction but we went to explore the graveyard, and though we saw no figures we did hear some unusual sounds...the sound of footsteps, a growl that sounded nothing like an animal, and a number of bangs, the night we went on was a windy, cold night. That can account for some of the banging, as for the other noises TEAM STRIGOI cannot say except, go one night when the wind is blowing fierce, and no moon...maybe you might hear what we heard or you might see THE FIGURE....

The Nile

The little town called “The Nile” has a few ghosts, for a small place their ghosts fill the place to the brim.

The Cemetery has a ghost of a female looking for her lost child, her child died during child birth and to harden the blow buried the child with out her consent, the child was placed in an unmarked grave. The woman dressed in black clothing and mourning for her child, walked the cemetery to find the grave, she was grief stricken and died through depression and loss of hope.

The Ayton Inn sits along side of the road, the place has been deserted for decades, and the place has become a roadside ruin. Its seems this place had bad luck through out, the Inn closed down due to many fights and occasional death, became a private residence owned by one generation family, we are not sure on the exact details but 4 members from a family committed suicide by hanging. On quiet nights strange sound and voices have been heard coming from the abandoned ruin.

When you leave The Nile keep an eye out for the fog, a strange fog gathers around a vehicle and follows it to the first bridge where it vanishes, the fog is patchy but noticeable, even though the area is clear this fog will suddenly appear and disappear near bridge.

Approaching the Nile from Evandale you will come across a small bridge, watch very closely do you see the old man standing on the bridge, when you reach a certain distance he disappears.

Deddington Cemetery

We explored this little cemetery a few years back, we captured some strange phenomena, a red mist was captured coming out of “John Glover’s” grave and friend was standing on the grave while taking the photo…big no no. Another photo revealed an apparition in the tree, the figure is from head, shoulders and sides, and it looks pink/ red colour and is floating half way up the tree.

Linda’s Leap

A sad tale of a jilted fiancé leaping to her death near the light house, only seen a couple time is an apparition of a female in colonial dress… leaping off, she is sometimes heard crying but no one can find the source of the weeping.

Supply River

Possibly the most frightening place on the Tamar River, and yet not many have heard of it and possibly didn’t know it existed. The place is over 180 years old and it has a small but brutal history. Mill workers were either killed by bushrangers or the local aboriginal tribe, one mill worker was found after being shot and left for dead… being eaten by pigs. It also has a reputation for lost people to commit suicide around the ruins… four in total have committed suicide.

The place is meant to come alive during September, as unearthly shrieks are heard coming from the ruin… plus dark shadowy figures have been seen walking in the ruin.

Entally House

This old colonial building and one of the oldest in Tasmania… even Australia, has a few spirits roaming inside and on the grounds. Apparition of a servant standing near the stairs and disappearing, the feeling of children in vicinity can be felt… by the sensation of uneasiness. Servant girls have been seen walking the drive way towards the home. Also plenty of sounds from wheelbarrows being pushed to voices heard. This place has a haunted reputation but none of the spirits have violent tendencies towards the living, the place has a home away from home feel to it… a welcoming feel.

Oak Lodge Bridge

Just outside of Launceston on the old Midlands Highway is a bridge… a convict built bridge that still as good today as when it was built. But it not the bridge it’s the corner near it as you approach Launceston, a young female walking crossing the old dirt road and was trampled by a horse and carriage… killing her instantly, on certain nights a young female is seen walking across the road, sometimes she is seen just standing there in the middle of the road. She has a tendency to cause cars to crash… some strange incidents have happened there over the years, is the female spirit searching for revenge and any vehicle is a target or is she just simply a residual haunting?

Port Arthur

Most people would have heard a tale or two about the ghostly hauntings,Over the space of 15 years, 3 people have had encounters centred around cell 14 in the separate prison… they have been grabbed firmly on the arm and pulled towards the cell entrance, however the entrance has been boarded over for a number of years prior to encounters. (For More look at the Port Arthur hauntings page)

Tara Hall

A bluish light has been witnessed on several occasions by the locals, Strange noises have been heard coming from the cellar, and ghostly apparitions of “Colonel Cimitiere” and a woman have been reported watching from a window over the bay…. possibly waiting for a love to return.

Kodak House Hobart

The friendly ghost of “Beryl” who haunts the second floor, she has been witnessed by many staff and she poses no threat towards anyone who encounters her, though she can get a bit mischievous as she knocks displays over, the staff have learnt to live with her. Recently I found a new story about a apparition who will only show herself to female staff members.

The Franklin Square Ghost

Taken on a recent ghost tour around Hobart, the group heard running behind them…. No one was there, but the running sounds still continued, someone took some photos from their phone camera and on one image it looks like a figure is running towards them, the guides say that after dark “The Square” takes on a whole new feeling, it’s a very creepy place at night.

Mercury newspaper article click here

1992 Lake Crescent (Tasmania)

Witnessed by two people camping at the lake as a ball of light six meters wide, it was hovering over the lake about ten meters above the lake… it disappeared shortly after into the nights sky

Bio-med Library at the UTAS seems to be having a few things that go bump in the night, the occurrences have been happening for a number of years.
