Old Supply River Mill:
WHAT: A water powered flourmill.
WHEN WAS IT BUILT: 1825 by Andrew Charlton?
The track is a 15/ 25 min walk depends on pace, the river was the main way to transport wheat to the mill, but in the 1840’s? A ship known as the (Dusty Miller) carrying 120 tons of wheat at (70 quid) a ton, crashed into rocks just out side the mouth of river.
This mill is situated on 10ha of thick bush land, running along side the mill is a quaint waterfall.
In 1829 business was booming and the mill was grinding out 400 sacks of grain, every day of the year.
It also had other dwellings here, such as a black smith, a 200 head piggery shed, and docks for the boats.
Some convicts worked in the mill these men were known as “Ticket of leave” (Mainly for good behavior),
By 1850 the mill started to slow down due to the steam mills closer to the city.By 1882 it became abandoned.
After its closing it became a place for picnic’s and moon light dances.
In the 1920’s a fire gutted out most of the dwellings, leaving only foundations and some walls.
In the 1930’s a flood destroyed what was left of the burnt out four story mill.
THE BRUTAL HISTORY
This mill was helpless against attacks from bush rangers and aborigines, In the 1830’s two bush rangers (Beaven &Britton) murdered two men named Bartlett and his boss Mr. Cathcart, leaving Bartlett’s body on the hill, when his body was found (which took awhile) it was a ghastly sight, starting to decompose and was being eaten by wild pigs, another mill worker (Mr. Gildas) was speared by local indigenous people but this is unconfirmed.
