When first built in 1821 it was used as a Prisoners Barracks, in 1857 it changed ownership and became the Town gaol.

The tower modeled on a Renaissance feel, is said to be the best of all (John Lee Archer)…. The style became the foundations for so many colonial churches in old Van Diemen’s Land.In 1860 it also became the criminal court, men spent time here until 1963 when a modern prison was used.The Penitentiary has become a tourist and educational center, where you can learn about the hard times had being here as a convict and modern prisoner, interesting historical facts about the construction and use of the penitentiary and for the lovers of the creepy side there’s a ghost tour to enjoy.
